Hawk Ellery Charter of Timber Arches from Auckland to Melbourne

Hawk Ellery New Zealand, G7N Projects member, acting as cargo agent, coordinated the transport of 91 curved timber beams to the Port of Auckland. This included lifting, stevedoring, surveying, fumigation, export clearance, and assistance with freight negotiations and shipping from Auckland to Melbourne, successfully completed across three separate charters.
The beams ranged in length from 7 to 30 meters, with a total weight of approximately 300 metric tonnes. The curve of the widest pieces measured up to 6 meters. A key challenge was their arched shape, which required meticulous planning for transport and stowage. A unified berth and fumigation zone were carefully selected to streamline road delivery, fumigation, and vessel loading at a single location, significantly reducing risk and port movement. A detailed lifting plan featuring double slinging was developed to help with weight distribution and limiting the number of arches per lift ensured safe and efficient handling.
Thorough planning, proactive approach, effective communication, and comprehensive risk assessment were all critical to the successful execution of this complex project.
We’re proud to be part of the G7N Projects networks and to benefit from the expertise of its members.
Kudos to Scott Ellery and team!
